One of the most beloved social platforms of the virtual reality and gaming world, Rec Room, is preparing to say goodbye after its ten-year adventure. According to the official statement made by the developer team, the platform will completely shut down its servers on June 1, 2026.

Why Is It Closing? Rec Room, which reached over 150 million players and hosted half a billion friendships, unfortunately could not reach a commercially sustainable point. Costs exceeding revenue due to difficulties in the gaming market and changes in the VR sector led to this difficult decision being made.

What’s on the Calendar?

  • Changes Starting Immediately: New account creation, adding friends, and RR+ membership transactions have been suspended. 80% discounts on existing content have begun.
  • May 1: Token purchases will end.
  • June 1: Servers will completely shut down; the game and website will be closed to access.

Don’t Forget to Save Your Data! The platform offers data download options so that players and content creators can protect their hard work. While players can download the photos they have taken and their avatar summaries in the form of a “report card”; content creators will be able to back up the data of the rooms they designed (in a way that can be revived in Unity format) via Steam until June 1.

Although it is sad to say goodbye to this digital universe where millions of people have showcased their creativity for ten years, Rec Room leaves behind a massive community legacy. If you have memories inside, do not neglect to drop by for one last time before June!
