Notes from Artificial Intelligence News - 14

Notes I took from the artificial intelligence news that caught my eye between March 23 and March 31.
- In the previous episode, I wrote that things were not going well at Stability AI and that it was preparing for economically difficult days. As of March 23, one of its founders, Emad Mostaque, who was serving as CEO, has resigned from his position. The Board of Directors appointed COO Shan Shan Wong and CTO Christian Laforte as the interim co-CEOs of Stability AI to replace Mostaque. I think we might see a lot of news about resignations, bankruptcies, acquisitions, and mergers from artificial intelligence technology companies over the next few years. It won’t be a surprise to me.
- It has become clear which phones Samsung, which introduced the ‘artificial intelligence era’ with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series this year, will bring Galaxy AI features to as of March 28. The Galaxy S23, Fold 5, and Flip 5 models will reportedly receive all of the artificial intelligence features offered for the S24 series.
- Runway has released a new lip sync feature that offers the ability to give voices to AI video characters. This feature allows users to add voiceovers to videos generated by artificial intelligence and produce more realistic and engaging content.
- The A18 Pro chip that Apple plans to use in the iPhone 16 Pro model is expected to significantly increase artificial intelligence (AI) performance on the device. According to information shared by Haitong International Tech Research analyst Jeff Pu, special AI-focused changes will be made to the A18 Pro chip. Advancements are expected in the fields of image processing, speech recognition, natural language processing, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). These developments are thought to make the iPhone 16 Pro even more powerful in areas such as photography, video editing, and gaming.
- Meanwhile, it is said that Apple, which is rumored to be in talks with Google to get artificial intelligence support, is this time holding talks with Baidu in China to bring artificial intelligence features to iOS 18. If these rumors are true, Apple can be expected to offer artificial intelligence features based on the region. Thus, they might be planning to bypass ‘some’ restrictions.
- News that Twitter Premium+ users will be able to use the Grok artificial intelligence chatbot hit the market. Later, Elon Musk said from his twttr account that all Premium users will be able to benefit from this feature. I wonder how good its performance is compared to Gemini or ChatGPT and how many people actually use it.
Later this week, Grok will be enabled for all premium subscribers (not just premium+) https://t.co/4u9lbLwe23 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 26, 2024
- Anthropic, the developer of the Claude 3 artificial intelligence model, received a $2.75 billion investment from Amazon. The investment amount is the largest investment in the company’s history. Believing that artificial intelligence has the potential to become one of humanity’s greatest assets, Anthropic will reportedly continue to develop artificial intelligence in a safer and more responsible way with this investment.
- Elon Musk reportedly believes that ‘super artificial intelligence’ is inevitable and could bring about the end of humanity. According to the Observer ’s report, he said that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the most important thing that could happen to humanity. He also thinks that AGI could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons and that there should be oversights aimed at its careful development.
- The talent hunt in the world of artificial intelligence is becoming so competitive that I saw the news that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg started writing personal emails to Google’s DeepMind employees, begging them to come and work on Facebook’s AI projects. I have my doubts about whether the news is true or not, but if it is true, it means a lot of ‘blood will flow’ in the coming years.
- It has been confirmed that the Google Pixel 8 will have the on-device Gemini Nano AI feature as previously planned. This feature will allow the Pixel 8 to become faster and more responsive. Gemini Nano AI is powered by Google’s Tensor chip. It is anticipated that the Pixel 8 will receive the Gemini Nano AI update along with a Pixel Feature Drop.
- While generative artificial intelligence continues its development, a rational and logical move came from MIT in the US. MIT has established a working group to research the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the future workforce. The working group will reportedly examine the potential benefits and risks of generative AI on the workforce. The group will also reportedly make recommendations for the responsible development and use of generative AI.
- Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly working on a new data center project called Stargate. The goal of the project is to provide more computing power to train OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models. The completion of Stargate is said to enable OpenAI to develop larger and more complex artificial intelligence models like GPT-5. It is said that the cost of the project could exceed 100 billion dollars. I don’t know if you noticed, but when it comes to artificial intelligence, talking about ‘hundreds of billions of dollars’ has now become commonplace.
- Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup x.ai announced Grok 1.5. Grok 1.5 reportedly comes with advanced reasoning capabilities and a context length of 128,000 tokens. It will reportedly be possible to use it on the X platform soon. To premium users, of course.
- OpenAI knows no pause. After the Sora video artificial intelligence, it has now announced its artificial intelligence voice engine, which has the capability to generate realistic voice using just a 15-second speech recording. With OpenAI’s latest blog post, where reproducing ourselves using AI was the only thing left, there is nothing left to say. There are samples of the voice engine announced on the site. The artificial intelligence technology, which reignites topics like identity theft, propaganda, and deepfake, has not been opened to general use for now. I feel like active days are waiting for us after the elections in the US.
