Notes from Artificial Intelligence News - 13

Notes I took from the artificial intelligence news that caught my eye between March 21 and March 22.
- Let’s start this episode with news from Jensen Huang, CEO of the shining star of artificial intelligence, Nvidia. Jensen Huang thinks that artificial intelligence (AI) will be able to generate every pixel of a game in real-time within ten years. Huang says this technology will democratize game development and make it easier for players to create their own games.
- Nvidia announced the “GR00T” project to create human-level artificial intelligence in robot form. NVIDIA introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform called “Isaac” to facilitate robot development. Isaac provides various tools and resources to accelerate the development process for robotics engineers and researchers. The platform includes foundational models and algorithms to help robots perform tasks such as perception, navigation, manipulation, and learning. NVIDIA thinks Isaac will foster innovation in robotics and accelerate the adoption of autonomous robots.
- Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reportedly estimates that 5 years are needed to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI). AGI is a theoretical type of intelligence that can mimic human intelligence and perform any task. Huang reportedly sees the development of AGI as one of humanity’s most important technological endeavors and continues to invest to achieve this goal. This is already evident from the other news above.
- MIT researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of generating high-quality images in a single step. Traditional AI models need multiple stages and numerous calculations to generate an image. The new model is called “Imagen” and utilizes two techniques: artificial neural networks and diffusion models. Imagen can create realistic and artistically pleasing images and is 30 times faster than traditional models.
- There is bad news about Stability AI, of which I am also a user. Stability AI, a startup known for developing the highly popular open-source image generator Stable Diffusion, is facing a serious crisis. According to Semafor’s report, the company is burning cash at an alarming rate and sees no clear path to profitability. Stability AI was not the sole inventor of Stable Diffusion. The actual model was developed by an international team of researchers from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and the New York-based company RunwayML. Emad Mostaque led the way in turning this AI model into an open-source image generator. However, according to Forbes, Mostaque hid how dependent his company was on the researchers behind Stable Diffusion. Three of these researchers left two German universities last week. Mostaque raised $100 million in funding at a $1 billion valuation in August 2022 during the early days of the AI craze. However, the company is currently in financial distress and needs urgent funding to survive.
- Microsoft has established a new unit called “Microsoft AI” and appointed Mustafa Suleyman, one of the leading figures in the field of artificial intelligence, as the head of this unit. Suleyman was a co-founder and CEO of Google’s DeepMind company. He left Google in 2022 and founded the AI startup named Inflection AI. Suleyman will report to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Microsoft AI will coordinate all of the company’s AI activities and focus on integrating artificial intelligence into the company’s products and services.
I’m excited to announce that today I’m joining @Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI. I’ll be leading all consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing and Edge. My friend and longtime collaborator Karén Simonyan will be Chief Scientist, and several of our amazing…— Mustafa Suleyman (@mustafasuleyman) March 19, 2024
- Google AI developed a new tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect flood disasters faster and more accurately. The tool reportedly automatically identifies floodwaters and flood-affected areas by analyzing satellite images. Google AI has reportedly already started piloting this artificial intelligence tool in countries with high flood risk, such as India and Indonesia.
- GitHub rolled out a new tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically fix bugs and vulnerabilities in code. The tool is called “Code Scanning Autofix” and is currently available as a beta release to GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) users. The tool supports popular programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, and Python. GitHub says the tool will help lighten the workload of developers and improve the security of their code.
- The United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted the first global resolution on the responsible and ethical development and use of artificial intelligence (AI). The resolution aims for AI to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, to be transparent and accountable, and to be beneficial for all people. The resolution establishes a framework for the development of AI policy and practices and encourages UN member states to cooperate in this area.

- OpenAI is said to be planning to launch GPT-5, the next version of ChatGPT, this summer. GPT-5 is expected to include significant improvements and be much more powerful than ChatGPT. These improvements reportedly include the ability to generate more realistic and coherent text, better understand complex instructions, and produce content in various creative formats.
- An Indian blogger who publishes about Android has published screenshots of Gemini working on Google Messages. Thus, we had the opportunity to meet the messages version of Gemini, albeit remotely.
