Notes from Artificial Intelligence News - 10

Notes I took from the artificial intelligence news that caught my eye between March 6 and March 10.
- I came across an interesting article on Qz.com . It states that currently most chatbots make money through subscriptions, but this method is not sustainable. It mentions that while technology companies are looking for new ways to generate more revenue from AI, the first thing that comes to mind is, of course, showing ads, and a future where we might see ads while chatting with ChatGPT, Gemini, or CoPilot AIs might not be too far away. Because according to the article, Google and OpenAI are in the testing phase. Leaving aside the ad-supported chat experience, the time is approaching for us to think about how everything we ask AI will one day change our consumption habits.
- Cloudflare announced that it has developed a firewall to protect artificial intelligence (AI) from malicious use. This firewall will prevent AI models from producing incorrect or biased outputs. Cloudflare states that AI provides benefits in many areas, but also carries risks. Cloudflare’s AI firewall is designed to mitigate these risks. The firewall will identify models that could produce incorrect or biased outputs by analyzing the data the AI models were trained on. Cloudflare’s AI firewall is still in the development phase. The company estimates that this firewall will be available in 2024.
- Anthropic AI announced a new language model called Claude 3. Anthropic AI is a company focused on developing artificial intelligence in a safe and beneficial way. Claude 3 has 137 billion parameters and is 40 times larger than GPT-3. Claude 3 is expected to better understand and generate text, code, and images.
- Elon Musk spoke about the future of artificial intelligence in an interview with The Verge. Musk argues that artificial intelligence is one of the most important technological developments facing humanity. Musk states that current electricity grids will not be able to meet the increasing energy demands of artificial intelligence and electric cars. He says that without new power sources, the AI revolution cannot happen and could even lead to a global catastrophe. Musk argues that investments should be made in renewable energy sources like solar and nuclear power.
- A counterattack has come in the lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI, which I mentioned in the last episode. OpenAI roasted Elon Musk in an article published on its own blog , signed by the most important names in the company 🙂 In the article where email logs of Elon Musk and the heavyweights of the company were published, it is understood that Musk wanted to establish complete dominance over OpenAI. I think nothing will come out of this lawsuit, but I will be eagerly waiting for the result. Bebar Bilim handled the event in detail in the video below.
- South Korean memory chip maker SK Hynix will invest $1 billion to increase semiconductor (memory chip for AIs) production over the next two years. The investment will reportedly be made at its Pyeongtaek and Icheon facilities in South Korea. SK Hynix reportedly aims to increase its DRAM capacity by 20% and NAND memory capacity by 30% by 2025.
- Facebook is reportedly working on developing a single artificial intelligence (AI) model to power all of its video recommendations. They reportedly aim for this model to offer more personalized and engaging video recommendations across Facebook’s video platforms (Facebook Watch, Instagram Reels, and TikTok rival Lasso). The new AI model will work by analyzing the user’s past video viewing history, likes, and interactions. With this move, Facebook aims to increase video watch time and user engagement across its platforms.
- A former Google employee named Linwei Ding (Leon Ding) has been arrested in the US on allegations of stealing the company’s artificial intelligence secrets. Ding started working as a software engineer at Google in 2019. The arrest was made upon the allegation that trade secrets were copied to personal cloud storage accounts from a laptop provided by Google. It is stated that the copied documents contained Google’s artificial intelligence infrastructure information.
- After being fired in November 2023, Sam Altman quickly regained his seat as CEO, but his return to the board of directors took place about 4 months later with an article published on the OpenAI blog. Along with Sam Altman, three new members were added. Instacart CEO and former Meta executive Fidji Simo, former Sony executive Nicole Seligman, and former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann. Perhaps the management storm last November will be good for the company. We will learn this over time.
