Notes from Artificial Intelligence News - 8
Notes I took from the artificial intelligence news that caught my eye between February 26 and February 29.
- Google is integrating its “Gemini” artificial intelligence into the Google Messages app. Soon, we will be able to chat with Gemini on various topics and get information right from the Messages app. Powered by Gemini 1.0 Pro, the chatbot will reportedly provide shorter answers suited for mobile phones. I hope we will also get our hands on the feature soon, which has started to be tested by a small group.
- At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, Qualcomm announced new generative AI features for Android phones running on the Snapdragon platform. Qualcomm calls its new artificial intelligence the Large Language and Vision Assistant (LLaVa) model. This model uses text, audio, or visual inputs. The aihub.qualcomm.com website has also been launched for Qualcomm’s all-in-one artificial intelligence. While AIs like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot rely on a cloud-based architecture, the artificial intelligence model developed by Qualcomm runs directly on the device with its 7 billion parameters. As can be seen from the Ai Hub page, it is currently unclear exactly when the technology, which will support many high-end phones, tablets, and Windows computers, will be released or whether it will be paid or free. But one thing is real: 2024 is pregnant with surprises…
- Microsoft continues its AI investments without slowing down. Now, it has agreed to a multi-year partnership with the leading French AI startup Mistral AI. This collaboration will enable Mistral AI to offer a new AI model called “Mistral Large” on the Azure platform, which will be a first for this platform. Mistral Large is a next-generation AI model capable of processing large datasets of text and code. This model will facilitate the development of advanced AI applications that can be used across various industries.
- Speaking of Microsoft, let’s continue. This time the news is from the mobile side. Those who wish will be able to set the Microsoft Copilot AI app as the default assistant for Android phones. As is known, Copilot is an application that can run on OpenAI’s GPT4 model and makes life quite easier with text and visual outputs. If you want to include the app, which is still in beta, more into your life, it will be possible soon. When the final version is released, we will see exactly what advantages it will provide compared to Google Assistant.
You can now set the Microsoft Copilot app as your default assistant app on Android!

- On the other hand, Google is not sitting idle. Although it has not yet been released in our country, it has added a new feature to Android phones with Gemini. With the Gemini AI assistant, it will be possible to access the Google Calendar app and create new events. I consider this news as a preview of what awaits us, not just on the basis of the calendar app, but thanks to its integrated operation with many Google services in the future.
- The European Union AI Act is about to ‘become law’. According to the information given by Aysu Dericioğlu Egemen in the video below, the draft law, which has been on the table since 2021, will be voted on by the parliament on April 10/11 and will then go to the council of ministers. The council of ministers has declared that it will adopt the law if it is approved in the parliament. If there are no hitches, it will be a first in the world in the field of artificial intelligence, and the first laws on this issue will have entered into force. I recommend watching the video for the details of the law.
- Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made his mark on the day, in my opinion, by saying that AI will replace coding in the future and children won’t need to learn to code. Huang stated that AI will make it easier to understand and use programming languages, and that even people without programming knowledge will be able to create simple applications using AI. Against these words, experts argue that AI will not completely eliminate coding, but it will reduce the importance and value of coding skills. It is important that this prediction goes down in history, because I hope we will see who will be right in a short period of time ahead.
- I suppose the new AI features of the Galaxy S24 series have been added to https://trygalaxy.com/ , which provides a Samsung phone usage experience when you visit the website from a mobile phone to convince iPhone users last year. This way, it is possible to step into the world of AI features, albeit virtually.
- Google is said to be paying some of its publishers for AI-generated news feeds. This AI tool is designed to help journalists produce content faster and more easily. Google says these tools will not republish other publishers’ work and will allow publishers to edit the articles before publishing them. However, it is known that AI-generated articles carry ethical and disinformation risks. Therefore, using these tools responsibly is underlined.
Google launched a private program for a handful of independent publishers last month, providing the news organizations with beta access to an unreleased generative artificial intelligence platform in exchange for receiving analytics and feedback. https://t.co/ZCn3pox7xa — ADWEEK (@Adweek) February 27, 2024
- Adobe Research announced that it is working on new artificial intelligence (AI) tools that will transform audio creation and editing. These tools can realistically clone voices, translate them into different languages, and even change their emotional tones. For example, AI can create a brand new song by imitating a singer’s voice or translate the dialogues in a podcast into a different language. These tools can be a huge time-saver for musicians, podcasters, and other audio content creators, and boost their creativity. Adobe says these AI tools are still in development, but have the potential to revolutionize the way we create and edit audio content.
- Today, from an e-mail I received, I learned that on the WordPress platform, owned by the company Automattic and which I also use on my blog, they will market the content created by users to AI companies. The Reddit company took a similar step in the past weeks. In fact, an annual figure of 60 million dollars had been a lifeline for Reddit before its IPO. It seems now the world’s largest blogging platform, ‘WordPress’, is preparing to take a similar step. Fortunately, they announced that they will offer users an option so their content is not looted by AI. I guess WordPress management, which has started talking to some companies, has already started preparing its cover. We will hear more about it in the coming months.

- Let the final news come from Nvidia. Rumors have started circulating on tech sites for the new RTX 5000 series graphics cards. It is being discussed that the RTX 5090 cards, which are likely to be released around the end of 2024 or early 2025, will perform 70% better than their predecessor, the 4090. An almost twofold performance increase in one series has already begun to attract the attention of those who need intensive processing power such as artificial intelligence, rendering, and scientific calculations. It would not be wrong to say that there will be a stock shortage for the 5000 series even before it comes out. Because unfortunately, this is the situation we have been used to for the last 6-7 years. And I won’t even get into the price issue!
