Notes from Facebook Connect 2021 Event
At this year’s Facebook Connect event, many important developments regarding the future vision of Facebook, or its new name Meta, were shared. The removal of the Facebook name from the logo on the promotion page before the event was already a harbinger of a major change.
Here are the highlighted notes from the event:
Company Name Changed: Let’s start with the biggest news; all platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are now gathered under the umbrella company named Meta. In addition, the Oculus Quest brand is becoming history. CTO Andrew Bosworth announced that as of 2022, the name of the device will be changed to Meta Quest, and its application to Meta Quest App.
Horizon Home: Your personal home in the virtual world was introduced. When you put on the VR headset, this will be the first stop where you will step into the Metaverse. You will be able to design your home as you wish and invite your friends.
Metaverse Vision: Mark Zuckerberg dedicated a large part of the presentation to the goal of creating a virtual world, the Metaverse. He claims that this vision will change the rules of the game. The Metaverse will be at the very center of 5G, AI, AR/VR, and next-generation communication technologies.
New VR Headset (Project Cambria): The first images of a new high-spec VR headset , planned to be released next year, were shared.
Augmented Reality (Project Nazare): Meta’s first fully equipped AR glasses were announced. With these glasses, plans to integrate virtual objects into the real world and stay connected with smart home devices were showcased.
Project Aria: Studies on 3D mapping and the use of contextualized artificial intelligence were shared.
The Legend Returns: It was announced that the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is being developed for Oculus Quest 2. We will soon be able to experience the legendary production in VR.
New Applications and 2D Support: The Polar application, developed to create AR filters, was introduced. In addition, it was announced that not only 3D but also 2D applications like Dropbox and Slack can be used in virtual reality.

Thanks to the new sensors, your gestures and facial expressions in the real world will be reflected on your avatars instantly.
