As the ‘modern human of the 21st century’, our perception of reality is changing, and our needs are changing in parallel with this. One of these is an alternative universe for the virtual world: the Metaverse. The major social media player Facebook announced that it will employ 10,000 new highly educated employees from European Union countries over the next 5 years to build a virtual world.

According to the statement published:

Facebook is at the beginning of a journey that will help create the next computing platform. Working together with others, we are developing what is called the ‘Metaverse’ - a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like virtual and augmented reality. At its heart, it is a new place where online interaction can be much closer to the experience of personal interaction by creating a greater sense of “virtual presence”. The Metaverse has the potential to help unlock access to creative, social, and economic opportunities. And Europeans will shape it right from the beginning.

No company will own and operate the metaverse. Like the internet, its main feature will be openness and interoperability. Bringing this to life will require collaboration among companies, developers, creators, and policymakers. For Facebook, it will also require continuous investment in product and technology talent, as well as growth across the business.

Therefore, today, we are announcing a plan to create 10,000 new highly skilled jobs within the European Union (EU) over the next five years. This investment is an indicator of confidence in the strength of the European technology industry and the potential of European technology.
