A team at BYU (Brigham Young University) is working to create 3D holographic images in mid-air without the need for AR glasses or a smartphone, and they recently released a video.

Laser beams moving through the air are utilized for the created 3D images. According to their own description, they named the technology they developed screenless volumetric display technologies. Led by Dr. Daniel Smalley, the team of electrical and computer engineers states that they were inspired by science fiction movies.

As written in the video description, unlike the screens we are used to, this created image can be viewed from any angle (360 degrees) and you do not need any equipment for it. In fact, they call this technology a “3D light printer” when describing it, making science fiction ‘almost’ real.
