Revolutionary holographic display technology for the automotive industry from Continental and Leia
Automotive technology manufacturer Continental has announced a partnership with Silicon Valley-based 3D display technology company Leia Inc. to develop a technology providing glasses-free holographic displays designed to enhance the safety and comfort of both drivers and passengers.
The technology, planned to be launched in 2022, is called the “Natural 3D Lightfield Instrument Cluster” by Continental and is expected to present important data between passengers and the machine-human interface in a highly interactive and safe manner by incorporating immersive elements such as 3D depth, highlighting important information, warnings, and various other light effects.
Jens Brandt, a senior official at Continental, stated regarding the topic: “One of the biggest challenges in the automotive industry is developing intelligent concepts for human-machine interaction and creating solutions that enhance the driver experience, allowing the driver to interact simply and effectively without being distracted from the road. The new Lightfield display not only brings the third dimension of the highest quality into the vehicle, but the innovative technology also creates a new dimension of comfort and safety. Our solution provides vehicle manufacturers with the ability to enhance the driver experience.”
The team using Leia’s lightfield technology processes 8 different perspectives of the generated 3D image so that it can operate without being affected by the viewing angle and without the need for glasses. Furthermore, with the company’s popular technology in its field, Diffractive Lightfield Backlighting (DLB), it is aimed to provide a clear image under all lighting conditions.
In the future, Continental and Leia hope to add additional features, including video calls, internet browsing, video and music streaming, and various AR -Augmented Reality- functions. For now, third-party developers can create their own “holographic” applications for the LeiaLoft content platform using the Automotive Software Development Kit (SDK).
