According to the report by E Hacking News, the government in India requested that a digital fingerprint be added to every message on Whatsapp so they can be tracked.

According to two senior government officials, they stated that WhatsApp needs to provide information about where messages originate from, how many people have read them, and how many people have forwarded them. “A digital fingerprint in WhatsApp messages will help you find the source of the message. That is all we want,” they said. (!)

The official said, “We don’t want to read the messages, but when we see a problematic message, we will go to WhatsApp to help us track the sender, and it is technically possible to track this.”

India, which amended its information technology law last December, believes that messaging on the internet cannot happen without anyone monitoring it and that the internet has reached the limits of anonymity.

Whatsapp declined to comment on the matter. I wonder why?
