Personally, I wanted to put an end to the conceptual confusion in the world of artificial intelligence. I researched the basic terms and took brief notes for you.

Today, artificial intelligence systems that play chess, drive cars, or make medical diagnoses are everywhere in our lives. Actually, we call these systems that work only for a specific purpose “Artificial Narrow Intelligence”. However, the real excitement and goal of the technology world is to go beyond the boundaries these systems were designed for and reach the level of “Artificial General Intelligence,” where they can think as versatilely as a human.

Here are those basic concepts explaining the evolution of artificial intelligence step by step:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): It is the capability of a computer or robot to perform complex activities such as decision-making, perception, object classification, or translation in a manner similar to intelligent beings.

  • Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI): Also known as “weak AI”. It is a type of artificial intelligence that focuses on a single task or problem in a specific area (for example, it can beat the world chess champion but cannot make you an omelet). All the artificial intelligence we use today falls into this category.

  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): It is a type of “strong AI” with capabilities equivalent to human intelligence and versatility. It is still in the research phase. Although it is difficult to give an exact date, experts think we may see the first examples toward the end of the 2020s.

  • Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI): It is a scenario where an artificial intelligence not only mimics human behavior and intelligence but surpasses it in every field. For now, it consists only of science fiction and theoretical predictions. Although what the consequences will be is a matter of great debate, experts predict that this level will not be reached for a long time.
